SLAC Unix Users

This information is for users with direct access to SLAC computers, not for GRID users.

Public UNIX machines:

SLAC provides a number of public UNIX machines to users with SLAC UNIX computer accounts. For ATLAS related work, we suggest to use the noric cluster. You can use SSH to access these machines remotely. More information can be found at the SLAC UNIX page.

Obtain SLAC computer accounts:

If you don't have a SLAC computer account yet, please see How to Obtain SLAC computer accounts for ATLAS . SLAC Computer Security page contents important information about computer security at SLAC, user responsibility and good practice.

ATLAS environment at SLAC:

The SLAC ATLAS Information page provides detailed information about the ATLAS offline computer environment.

There is an HyperNews group for discussion of ATLAS computing issues at SLAC environment. For general issues regarding UNIX computing at SLAC, please send e-mail to unix-admin.

Batch farm:

SLAC batch farm is managed under the Load Share Facility (LSF). For beginners, please refer to "Running Jobs with Platform LSF". A quick overview of SLAC LSF system is available. We will provide more ALTAS specific information soon:

  • SLAC encourages users to submit jobs to the general queues. They are short, medium, long, xlong and xxl.
  • A LSF group "atlas" is available for ATLAS users. To list the member of this group, use "bugroup -l atlas". To be included in this group, please send e-mail to unix-admin.
  • When submitting to general queues, members of the "atlas" group have a higher "Fair Share" in LSF than general users. Type "bqueues -l queue_name" for detail information about each queue, including the fair share assigned to the "atlas" group.
  • Information regarding LSF fairshare is available in "Administering Platform LSF", under "Fairshare Scheduling".

Desktop and Laptop:

Please refer to the SLAC computer security page if you intend to bring in desktops and laptops. SLAC provides an open wireless network connection. This will likely change in the future for security and accountability reason. For printing, please refer to "Print at SLAC" page.
